Yesterday, Defense Secretary Gates announced 3 month blanket extensions of military tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, as apparently the only way the “surge” can be sustained. We learned that no general wants to fill the new post of “war czar” under Bush. Today, because of the ACLU’s efforts, the US government is being forced to reveal some of the details of killings, injuries and property damage inflicted by US military on Iraqi civilians.
70% of the US wants the war over. Yet, next week, unless he bullies the Democrats into removing any timeline for troop withdrawal, Bush will veto the war appropriations bill.
Are we going to accept the tyranny of Bush’s veto, or the collapse of the Democrats to his terms? In the face of the utter denial of what the people clearly want, are we going to passively wait to see what will get "worked out" between Bush and Congress? NO, we should be in the streets!
Sharon in the WCW National Office writes that on the day of Bush’s veto: “In every city and town across America, people of conscience must go to their federal building or city hall, their village green, the offices of their elected representatives and say "NO MORE" to endless war. Gather between 5 and 6 p.m. Make signs. Show you do not share a vision of Americans as the authors of illegal and immoral war.”
I’d add the point that demanding impeachment is not only justified by the conduct of this war of aggression, but necessary as a way to limit Bush’s options to expand the war and attack Iran. |
