There is currently a midwife bill, SB 477, working it's way through the legislature in Madison. This bill, if passed, will license non-nurse midwives to practice in Wisconsin.
The bill covers regulation, licensure, education, disclosure, and a formal disciplinary process governing non-nurse midwives. It also deals well with the liability issue, removing it, from physicans and other health care providers that work with non-nurse midwives.
It has passed the Health Care Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and is scheduled for a vote in the House this week or early next week. This would be a good time to contact your state Representative and state Senator to voice your opinion on this bill.
I personally am IN FAVOR of the legislation as it deals with a need that many of us have, that is, qualified midwives in the neighborhood.
If you do not know who your legislators are, you can easily find out at www.legis.state.wi.us/ where you can type in your address and get all the info that you will need to make the contact.
