Dems Back Down, Approve War Money Print E-mail

(Associated Press) - WASHINGTON — Bowing to President Bush, the Democratic-controlled House reluctantly approved fresh billions for the Iraq war on Thursday, minus the troop withdrawal timeline that drew his earlier veto. 

The Senate vote to send the legislation to the president was 80-14. Less than two hours earlier, the House had cleared the measure, 280-142, with Republicans supplying the bulk of the support.

US Public, Republicans Disown Iraq War Print E-mail

(Inter Press Service) - Even as Congress moved to approve President George W. Bush's request for continued funding of the Iraq war through the end of this fiscal 2007, a major new poll released Thursday found that public disillusionment with the war has reached record highs.

The New York Times/CBS News poll, the latest in a series of recent surveys that have shown an unexpectedly sharp drop in support both for Bush and the war, came as Congress prepared to vote on a controversial compromise bill that would give Bush some $100 billion more for U.S. military operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Northland College Votes No War Print E-mail
Students at Northland College went to the polls on Wednesday, May 2, to vote on a campus referendum on the Iraq war. The question on the ballot was a simple one, "Do you support the current war in Iraq?" Of the 123 students who voted, only 18 voted "yes", while 105 voted "no" - a resounding anti-war vote.
