New U.S. Embassy in Iraq cloaked in mystery Baghdad locale, slated to be completed in 2007, to be largest of its kind BAGHDAD, Iraq - The fortress-like compound rising beside the Tigris River here will be the largest of its kind in the world, the size of Vatican City, with the population of a small town, its own defense force, self-contained power and water, and a precarious perch at the heart of Iraq’s turbulent future.

The new U.S. Embassy also seems as cloaked in secrecy as the ministate in Rome. We can’t talk about it. Security reasons,” Roberta Rossi, a spokeswoman at the current embassy, said when asked for information about the project.

U.S.-IRAQ: Pentagon Gives Blackwater New Contract Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, Sep 28 (IPS) - A U.S.-based private security firm received a contract worth up to 92 million dollars from the Department of Defence amid hard questions about its involvement in two separate violent incidents in Iraq.

"Blackwater has been a contractor in the past with the department and could certainly be in the future," said the U.S.’s top-ranking military officer, General Peter Pace, at an afternoon press conference here.

LA City Council Adopts Resolution To End Iraq War Print E-mail

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution Tuesday calling for an end to the war in Iraq, making it the largest city in the nation to make such a call.

"Today the city of Los Angeles is sending a message loud and clear -end the war in Iraq," Councilman Bill Rosendahl said, drawing cheers from an anti-war audience packing the council chamber. "We are calling for an immediate and complete withdrawal of United States military personnel from Iraq," said Rosendahl, who introduced the resolution. "We have lost too many of our young men and women to this illegal and unjust war."
