Zen Home School Popular Bookmark  Naropa University
ZHS offers sane and secular peace education tools for parents, teachers and young people of all cultures to use at home. Like the Taoist view of life, natural education is the continuous process of looking to nature to discover the physics of reality. And like the Zen way of seeing life the way it really is, natural education tells the truth. Zen Home School offers online tutorials for parents, teachers, and life-long learners for a modest tuition each term.

NU is devoted to peace studies by offering educational programs that: Cultivate awareness of the present moment through intellectual, artistic, and meditative disciplines; Foster a learning community that uncovers wisdom and heart; Cultivate openness and communication, sharpen critical intellect, enhance resourcefulness, and develop effective action in all disciplines; Exemplify the principles grounded in NU's Buddhist educational heritage; Encourage the integration of world wisdom traditions with modern culture; and are Nonsectarian and open to all.

Wilderness Awareness School Ishmael

Wilderness Awareness School is dedicated to caring for the earth and our children by fostering understanding and appreciation of nature, community and self.  Their vision is to reach out with teachings until there's a related nature awareness school in every region, a mentor in every neighborhood, a naturalist in every family and compassion for each other and the earth in every heart.

A Book by Daniel Quinn

What makes Ishmael important is not what it's "about" but rather what it DOES to you--and this is what you need to share with your friends. If it's taken you to a new place in your life (as many people say it has), then tell them that if they want to keep up with you, they're just going to have read it. Whatever it's done to you or for you, that's what will impress your friends, and that's what you need to convey to them.

Whitman College Semester in the West Popular Bookmark  Internet Public Library

Semester in the West is part of Whitman College's Environmental Studies Department. Whitman's program is multidisciplinary in organization, and local and regional in empirical emphasis. Students wrestle with the challenges, and come to understand the necessities of an interdisciplinary approach in the elucidation of environmental problems. They develop literacy in understanding their Walla Walla environmental address so they can appreciate the deep links between their temporary community and the surrounding human and natural environments. Field trips and internship opportunities are a vital part of this experience.

The Internet Public Library (IPL), is a public service organization and learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information. It deals with education that takes place outside of traditional public or parochial school systems, as well as education programs that are offered as alternatives within formal educational systems and provide innovative and flexible instruction, curriculum, grading systems, degree requirements.

Schoolsux First Amendment Schools Popular Bookmark

School Sux primarily listens to what kids have to say specifically about school, and reports in various public media on that crucial information and feedback (without revealing the identity of any students, of course). They will support students and back them up as much as possible when students feel that they have not been treated properly. Their hope is to bring awareness and attention to people that school may often actually do more harm than good.

FAS educates for Freedom and Responsibility. It is a national initiative designed to help schools affirm First Amendment principles and put them into action throughout their communities.

The FAS Affiliate Program allows school communities to identify themselves with the FAS aims of educating for freedom and responsibility, and provides them with useful resources to help them in their daily work.

Rethinking Schools Popular Bookmark  Educators to Stop the War Popular Bookmark

Rethinking Schools is firmly committed to equity and to the vision that public education is central to the creation of a humane, caring, multiracial democracy. It is an activist publication that balances classroom practice and educational theory, with articles written by and for teachers, parents, and students. It also addresses key policy issues, such as vouchers and marketplace-oriented reforms, funding equity, and school-to-work.

Educators to Stop the War brings together people with different understandings/views of the war and its causes and priorities in building opposition to it. However, they are in agreement on the basic points that unite them:  STOP THE WAR – BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW – MONEY FOR EDUCATION AND SOCIAL NEEDS, NOT FOR WAR.

ESW is a project of U.S. Labor Against the War, a national coalition of unions and other labor organizations.  They urge you to work to get your union to affiliate with USLAW, and hope that you will join USLAW as an individual whether or not you are a union member.  Get more information at www.uslaboragainstwar.org.

Ratical is an electronic manifestation of rat haus reality press, dedicated to promulgating and promoting life-nurturing activities and awarenesses regarding this home we all share and are all responsible for, not simply for the seventh generation of humankind yet unborn, but for all life germinated and nourished by Gaia.

The human transition from an adolescent, "industrial-mind" value system, based only on asking the question, "is it possible?", to Gaia- sustaining and promoting practices and explorations which must ask the question, "Is it appropriate?" is the only possible future of human activity on this earth. Without taking responsibility for everything we participate in here, we condemn to premature termination the exquisite eons of life exploring itself in this dimension.

CAFE PROGRESSIVE is a progressive launchpad and a thriving independent and alternative community of progressive resources and ideas for teachers and educators, political activists, multicultural students and citizens.
